Your company policy doesn’t allow you to use Skype Meeting Broadcast

Issue

I recently configured a Skype for Business Server 2015 hybrid with Skype for Business Online.

When Skype for Business users try to access the Skype Meeting Broadcast portal, they get the following error:

“Your company policy doesn’t allow you to use Skype Meeting Broadcast.  Check with your system admin to make sure the service is enabled and that you have the correct license.”

SfBBroadcastError

Investigation

Skype Meeting Broadcast is enabled on the tenant:

BroadcastEnabled

All other config and requirements to use Skype Meeting Broadcast in a hybrid configuration are in-place, but none of this is relevant to the the above error.

The customer is using Office 365 Academic licensing.

The account I am testing with has Skype for Business Online (Plan 2) enabled, via the Office 365 A1 for faculty license applied to it.

Microsoft say (here) that if a user has any of the following licenses applied to them, they will be blocked from using Skype Meeting Broadcast.

  • Office 365 Education Fac/Staff
  • Office 365 Education Student
  • Office 365 Education Plus Fac/Staff
  • Office 365 Education Plus Student
  • Office 365 Education E1 Fac/Staff
  • Office 365 Education E1 Student
  • Office 365 Education E3 Fac/Staff
  • Office 365 Education E3 Fac/Staff Large
  • Office 365 Education E3 Student
  • Office 365 A3 student use benefit
  • Office 365 A5 student use benefit
  • Office 365 A5 w/o PSTN conferencing student use benefit
  • Microsoft 365 A3 student use benefits
  • Microsoft 365 A5 student use benefits
  • Microsoft 365 A5 student use benefits w/o PSTN Conferencing

Office 365 A1 is the new name for Office 365 Education.

So the user is blocked from using Skype Meeting Broadcast because of the license applied to them.

Fix

To use Skype Meeting Broadcast, any licenses in the above list need to be removed from the user.  Note they must be removed, turning Skype for Business Online (Plan 2) off under one assigned license, and then enabling it under another will not work.

I removed the Office 365 A1 for faculty license, applied an Office 365 A5 for faculty license, and then enabled Skype for Business Online (Plan 2).  I was then able to sign in and use Skype Meeting Broadcast.
