If you try to import PST files (via network upload) into Exchange Online and get the following error in the Office 365 Security & Compliance Center, it’s because you need to be assigned the Mailbox Import Export role in Exchange Online.
“To create import jobs, you must be assigned the Mailbox Import Export role in Exchange Online. After the role is assigned, it might take up to 24 hours before you can start creating jobs.”
By default, this role isn’t assigned to any role group in Exchange Online.
Below I have added the Mailbox Import Export role to the Organization Management role group. Alternatively, I could have created a new role group, assigned the Mailbox Import Export role to it, and then added myself as a member.
Edit the Organization Management role, add Mailbox Import Export.
The Mailbox Import Export role has been added. Although Microsoft state it can take up to 24 hours before you can start creating jobs, I was able to do so within 12 hours.
