Prerequisite installation failed: RewriteModule

Issue

When installing a new Skype for Business Server 2015 Standard Edition Server on Windows Server 2016, the component installation fails with error “Prerequisite installation failed: RewriteModule”.

RewriteError

BootStrapFull log has the following entries that correspond to the above error:

Name of prerequisite: RewriteModule
Type of prerequisite: msi
Method used to check prerequisite state: RewriteModuleNeeded()
Result of state check: True
Installation result: 1603
Error: Prerequisite installation failed: RewriteModule

Add-rewrite_2.0_rtw_x64.msi*.log has the following entries:

Action start 15:44:52: LaunchConditions.

MSI (s) (70:FC) [15:44:52:165]: Product: IIS URL Rewrite Module 2 — IIS Version 7.0 or greater is required to install IIS URL Rewrite Module 2.

MSI (s) (70:FC) [15:44:52:399]: Product: IIS URL Rewrite Module 2 — Installation failed.

MSI (s) (70:FC) [15:44:52:399]: Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: IIS URL Rewrite Module 2. Product Version: 7.2.2. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Installation success or error status: 1603.

Resolution

The IIS Rewrite Module installer looks at the IIS version, however validates the version against an incorrect value.

Change the following registry key from decimal 10 to 7.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InetStp\MajorVersion

Original value:

MajorVersion10

New value:

MajorVersion7

Re-run the Skype for Business Server Components installation.

This time the IIS URL Rewrite Module will be installed successfully.

Add-rewrite_2.0_rtw_x64.msi*.log has the following entries:

MSI (s) (A8:CC) [15:54:24:222]: Product: IIS URL Rewrite Module 2 — Installation completed successfully.

MSI (s) (A8:CC) [15:54:24:222]: Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: IIS URL Rewrite Module 2. Product Version: 7.2.2. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Installation success or error status: 0.

Revert the MajorVersion registry key back to decimal 7.
